Buying a Tuba

In 1835, in Berlin – Prussia (now Germany), Wilhelm Friedrich and Johann Gottfried patented what is now the largest brass instrument. If you are thinking of buying a tuba, it is important to know the details about this wonderful instrument, which we share below.

The main role of the tuba in orchestration and chamber music is to provide rhythmic and harmonic support for the group it is part of. It is also a relevant component in bands, as it takes on the role of the double basses in transcriptions, in addition to having its own.

The tuba is also used in performing rhythms such as jazz, in which it played a fundamental role in its early days. Currently, there are great performers of this instrument in this genre, among whom Bob Stewart and Jon Sass stand out.

The Tuba Family

Some brass instruments, despite having their own names, are also associated with tubas. This group constitutes what is called the tuba family, which includes:

  • ·The tuba or contrabass tuba: This is the one commonly associated with the simple name of tuba, and it is distinguished by its large size compared to the other members of the family.
  • The euphonium or bombardino: Also known as tenor tuba, it produces a higher sound than the former.
  •  The helicon: This instrument is morphologically different from the other members of this family, but some experts still include it within it.

Characteristics of a Tuba

A tuba is a brass instrument that is very distinguishable due to its large size and deep sound. It is easy to identify within the instruments of an orchestra or band, as due to its size, it is played resting on the player's legs.

The tuba consists of a vertically coiled tube that, if stretched out, would reach five to seven meters in length. This long tubing, along with other design elements, allows it to produce the powerful and low sound that characterizes it.

The sound of the tuba originates from the vibration produced by the lips on a small semi-round structure called a mouthpiece. The quality of the mouthpiece is decisive for the sound quality generated by the instrument. A low-quality tuba mouthpiece can ruin the sound produced by a tuba of excellent construction.

The contrabass tubas currently available on the market are tuned to C or B flat (B♭). When tuned to C, it is called a French tuba, and it is easily recognized because it has six pistons or valves.

What to Consider When Buying a Tuba?

When it comes to buying a tuba, some doubts often arise about which type is most appropriate for the player's personal needs. Below, we summarize the criteria to consider in order to make the right choice.

Size of the Tuba

The tuba is a large and heavy instrument, so it is important to select the appropriate size that adapts to the anthropometric characteristics of the player. The size of this brass instrument is typically described in fractions of quarters, namely, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, and 6/4. A smaller fraction means a smaller and lighter tuba, so a 3/4 tuba is smaller and lighter than a 6/4.

Small tubas (3/4 and 4/4) sound brighter and higher than the others, making them preferred for performances in small bands or intimate settings. On the other hand, large tubas (5/4 and 6/4), due to the gravity and power of the sound they generate, are used in large orchestras or brass ensembles. Additionally, small tubas are ideal for children and teenagers starting to play this unique musical instrument.

Number of Valves

As with any brass musical instrument, the number of valves is an important aspect to consider when acquiring a tuba. The valve configurations of tubas can vary from just a trio of valves to models with six valves. Fewer valves make the instrument easier to play but reduce its execution precision. Therefore, while beginners tend to prefer tubas with fewer valves, experts lean towards those with a higher number.

How Long Does It Take to Learn to Play the Tuba?

Although it may not seem like it at first, the tuba and the euphonium (its smaller cousin) are relatively easy instruments to play. In fact, the main reason for manufacturing smaller tubas (3/4) is to facilitate handling by children. Its ease of play makes the tuba a common starting point for learning to play brass instruments.

With an average dedication, it is estimated that the fundamentals of tuba fingering can be mastered in about six months.
