In this section you will find all the current models of microphones and microphone systems according to your needs as a musician. The latest in technology and the best brands, the best, all at affordable prices with the convenience of buying online with complete security.

Microphones and microphoning systems are essential devices for singers, musicians, producers, and audio content creators such as podcasters, etc. However, choosing the right devices can be quite a challenge, given the wide variety of options available.

Before purchasing such a device, it is crucial to consider what you want to record. Needing a karaoke microphone is not the same as needing a professional one for recording with a guitar or saxophone, for example.

You can find them all here; buy them at discounted prices.

What Does a Microphone Do?

A microphone converts acoustic signals into electrical signals, which are then reproduced by the equipment it is connected to. Therefore, it is a device defined as an acoustic-electric transducer.

Sounds, whether from the voice or instruments, produce vibrations that exert pressure on the diaphragm inside the microphone. This membrane, similar to the eardrum, is connected to a device that varies depending on the type of microphone. It can be, for example, a crystal, a coil, a capacitor, etc.

Characteristics of a Good Microphone

To buy a good professional microphone, it is essential to know its most important characteristics.

Sensitivity

The sound quality of this device partly depends on this factor. Sensitivity indicates how strong the audio signal must be for it to be captured by the microphone.

The most sensitive microphones operate at around 50 decibels (50 dB), while those with lower sensitivity require a higher audio level for the diaphragm to capture the vibrations. In this sense, the more sensitive the microphone, the greater the amount of sounds it can capture from its surroundings.

Polar Pattern

This is another of the most critical specifications of a wired or wireless microphone. The polar pattern refers to the directionality of the device; they do not capture sound equally from all sides. That is, there are directions in which they are more or less sensitive to sound.

It is essential to know the microphone's directivity patterns to position them correctly during recordings. Generally, there are three types:

Unidirectional

These capture sound in one direction. Within this category, the most well-known pattern is the cardioid. It is a microphone that receives the signal better when speaking from the front. There are other variations like hypercardioid and supercardioid. These are characterized by being more open, allowing better capture from the rear and sides.

Bidirectional

These are microphones that capture sound from both sides of the capsule. This means they are equally sensitive from the front and rear but not from the sides. They are useful when recording two people sitting across from each other with one microphone.

Omnidirectional

These capture sound signals from all angles and directions. In other words, no matter which side the sound comes from, it will be captured perfectly. This type of microphone, being sensitive in all directions, produces the most natural sound.

Frequency Response

This term refers to how well a microphone can reproduce the signals it is capturing. In a perfect world, it would be a one-to-one reproduction. That is, the device captures the sound and perfectly converts it into an electronic signal that is transferred to the recorder.

But the reality is different; some vibrations are lost along the way, and part of the information never makes it to the final recording. Therefore, it is essential to pay attention to the frequency range, from highest to lowest, that the microphone can capture.

A device with a frequency response range of 80 Hz to 15 kHz would be a good choice for a vocal microphone. However, for miking drums and timbales, it would be better to opt for one with a lower range, around 50 Hz. If a kick drum microphone is needed, for example, it would be best to choose one rated at 40 Hz or even lower, down to 30 Hz.

Connectivity

Another key characteristic to evaluate in this device is the type of connection it has. You must know what it is to ensure compatibility between the microphone and the rest of the system.

There are two main types of connections: XLR and USB. The first is typically used for recording vocal or instrumental music or for those who need higher quality sound. However, it is important to note that they are more expensive than USB microphones and also require an audio interface.

The second is often the most convenient and easiest to use because it can be connected directly to a computer. It includes an analog-to-digital converter (audio interface).

What Types of Microphones Are There?

Most microphones belong to one of two categories: dynamic and condenser. Each has specific characteristics that make them more suitable for one activity or another.

Dynamic Microphone

These are the most commonly used because they work very well in noisy environments. They are appropriate for recording an artist on stage, for interviews, or for capturing sound from a guitar or drums.

Dynamic microphones use electromagnetic induction to convert sound into audio. They have a small wire coil attached to a diaphragm that is sensitive to vibrations. They are suitable for most recording environments because their components are very durable.

In general terms, they are the type of microphone least sensitive to changes in sound pressure and physical damage. However, their disadvantage is that they sometimes do not capture all frequencies equally, meaning they may not capture all the nuances of a performance as well as condenser microphones do.

Condenser Microphone

These devices convert sound into audio through electrostatic principles. Unlike dynamic microphones, they do not use coils and magnets, but rather plates that, along with the diaphragm, form a sort of capacitor. These microphones require an external power source, internal batteries, or phantom power supplied by the mixer input.

They are the type of microphone most commonly used in professional recordings due to their high sensitivity and good frequency response. Large diaphragm microphones are typically used for recording vocals, while small diaphragm microphones are used for instruments like acoustic guitars.

On the downside, these devices are not as robust as dynamic microphones and tend to be more expensive, although at La Musa, you will always find attractive prices that are affordable for your budget.

Phantom Power: What Is It?

Phantom power is a method for providing continuous power (DC voltage) to condenser microphones through the cable. It typically transmits between 11 and 52v of DC, but most devices require 48v.

In Spanish, phantom power means "ghost power." The name comes from the fact that there is no external power source providing energy to the microphone. This type of power can be generated from audio interfaces, mixers, or dedicated 48v phantom power supplies.
