Buying an Alto Flute or Bass Flute
The sweet sound characteristic of the piccolo and transverse flute is complemented in large orchestras by two variations of the latter: the alto flute and the bass flute. These allow for an expanded note range managed by the family of transverse flutes and increase the variety of tones and registers available in the wind-instrument section.
In our store, La Musa Instrumentos, you'll find a wide variety of these instruments at the most competitive prices in the market. Our offer includes everything from inexpensive alto flutes and bass flutes (ideal for beginners) to those for professional use.
Transverse Flute Family
The instruments included in the transverse flute family are as follows:
- Piccolo flute or flautín. Tuned in C, one octave higher than the transverse flute.
- Transverse flute or flute. Tuned in C.
- Alto flute. Tuned in G.
- Bass flute. Tuned in C, one octave lower than the transverse flute.
As you can see, the last two types of flutes extend the family’s note range by an additional octave. This enriches the sound available in orchestras that include both instruments.
Alto Flute
Below you can learn about the characteristics and uses of this instrument.
Characteristics
The alto flute is characterized by its rich and smooth tone, especially in the lower part of its range. It is a transposing instrument, as it uses the same fingerings as the transverse flute (or flute in C) to produce a perfect fourth below the written notes on the staff.
Physically, this type of flute is very similar to the transverse flute, except for its larger size. In fact, the key positions are similar, so the fingering technique for both the alto flute and the transverse flute is identical.
This instrument consists of three main components:
- Headjoint. This is the part where the performer blows into. In some models, it is straight, while in others it has a U-shape.
- Body. The perforated tube where the air circulates and which supports the key mechanism.
- Footjoint. The final end where the air exits the instrument.
Some models have a so-called high E mechanism, a feature that allows for easier playing of the high E note by closing one of the G keys.
What is the Role of the Alto Flute in the Orchestra or Band?
In large orchestras, the alto flute supports the interpretation of the brass section. In classical literature, it is particularly associated with the works of Igor Stravinsky and Maurice Ravel, who gave prominence to this instrument. Several concertos have also been written for alto flute, and alto flute and piano, particularly in the last two decades of the past century.
Additionally, its unique sound has been used in film soundtracks, including The Lord of the Rings. Currently, there are notable performers of this instrument, including Christian Le Delezir, Christine Potter, and jazz musicians Ali Ryerson and Brian Landrus.
Bass Flute
Below, you can learn about the particularities and uses of this instrument.
Characteristics
The main characteristic of this instrument is its long length, making it the member of the transverse flute family capable of producing the lowest notes. Since it uses the same sheet music as the transverse flute, it is not considered a transposing instrument, although it sounds one octave lower.
It has the same parts as the alto flute, with the difference that most models feature a U-shaped headjoint. This facilitates playing, as it allows the arms to be closer to the body.
What is the Role of the Bass Flute in the Orchestra or Band?
Its use in large orchestras is limited to participation in flute choirs, as it produces a weaker sound compared to other instruments with the same range. In particular, its sound tends to be overshadowed by that of the clarinet, an instrument with a similar tone but greater resonance.
In popular music, like the alto flute, it has been used in soundtracks and, due to its soft sound, for accompanying romantic ballads.

Why Are They Called Alto Flute and Bass Flute?
The names of these instruments are based on the note range they handle: the alto flute is tuned in G (3) and the bass flute in C (4). Therefore, the range of the alto flute is higher than the latter, or in other words, the range of the bass flute is lower than that of the former.
How Much Does an Alto Flute or Bass Flute Cost?
