Buy a Euphonium
The euphonium, or baritone horn, is a relatively unknown instrument outside the world of wind bands and large orchestras. Although it is not part of the brass quintet, it often participates as a solo guest, even in some jazz groups. Below you will find key aspects of this instrument, which will help you buy a euphonium suited to your specific needs.
Characteristics of a Euphonium
The euphonium is a brass instrument with pistons or rotary valves, whose sound is produced by the vibration of the player's lips on a mouthpiece, generating a column of air. The euphonium mouthpiece is similar to that of the trombone, although slightly wider and with a rounded rim. Its throat (the hole where air enters) is also a bit larger, which allows it to produce a fuller sound.
Its shape resembles that of a tenor tuba or a high horn, with which it is often confused, although there are important differences. There is a smaller version of this instrument, known as the baritone euphonium, which produces a higher-pitched sound.
The standard euphonium is a transposing instrument naturally tuned to B-flat (Bb), meaning it produces this note when no valves are pressed. In the United States, the United Kingdom, and some Latin American countries, music for this instrument is written in bass clef and without transposition. In Europe, its score is usually written transposed in B-flat and in treble clef.
What Is the Function of the Euphonium in an Orchestra or Band?
The main sound characteristic of this unique brass instrument is its timbre, very similar to that of a cello, which is why it is often called the cello of the wind band. For this reason, one of its main uses in bands is to perform solos.
What Are the Types of Euphoniums?
There are only two types of this brass instrument: the baritone euphonium and the standard euphonium. However, some experts are reluctant to include the baritone euphonium as a variant, as it has three pistons instead of the four found in the standard euphonium.
What to Consider When Buying a Euphonium?
The main aspects you should consider when buying a euphonium are listed below.
Usage
Many euphonium models available on the market are designed for a more or less specific purpose. There are instruments designed for beginners and advanced students, as well as for conservatory use. Additionally, there are models for professional use in brass bands or jazz, and those suited for large classical music orchestras. Therefore, you should choose a model that fits the intended use for your euphonium.
Materials
The alloy of copper and zinc, called brass, is the main material used to build euphoniums, with nickel used to a lesser extent. The composition of the brass varies, with yellow brass (low copper content) used in more economical instruments, and red brass (high copper content) used in more expensive ones.
However, many euphonium models have some type of metallic coating on their surface, which not only protects it but also gives it a superb and elegant appearance. These include gold or silver plating, typically found on higher-priced instruments.
How Much Does a Euphonium Cost?
The price of an affordable euphonium, made by a reputable instrument manufacturer, is around 400 euros. On the other hand, a professional euphonium with gold plating costs around 7,500 euros.
How Long Does It Take to Learn to Play the Euphonium?
With average dedication, it takes about eight months to master the basic principles of playing a non-transposing euphonium.
