What is a Euphonium?

Before buying a euphonium, let's define what it is, its characteristics, and its types so you can have a clearer idea when deciding.

The euphonium is an instrument from the brass wind family, also known as a tenor tuba or euphonium. It is relatively unknown; however, it is often used in solo performances and jazz bands. Most euphoniums are manufactured with pistons, although some models have valves.

Its creation dates back to approximately 1838-1843. The current piston system was invented in 1818, and in 1874, thanks to David Blaikley, the first euphonium with a compensated system emerged.

Below, you can discover some qualities of this instrument, which will help you choose which euphonium to buy.

Characteristics

The sound of the euphonium is produced by the vibration of the player's lips, who blow through the mouthpiece, allowing the airflow through the instrument's body. This mouthpiece has a wide and rounded structure, much like that of a trombone.

The euphonium is designed with a thin tubing that gradually widens until ending in a large bell. Commonly, they come with pistons, elongated pieces responsible for creating high or low notes. Euphoniums are often tuned in B flat (Bb).

Types of Euphoniums

In the musical world, there are three types of euphoniums:

  • Beginner: have only three pistons.
  • Intermediate: have three pistons and are designed for students who have surpassed the basic level of learning.
  • Professional: professional euphoniums are composed of three pistons or valves on the upper part, and another piston on the lower part of the third tuning slide. As the name suggests, they are intended for the use of knowledgeable musicians.

Which Euphonium to Buy? Which is best for me?

If you are still unsure about which euphonium to buy, follow these tips from La Musa:

  1. Consider the intended use; if you are a beginner, a simple model that allows smoother learning is suitable. If, on the other hand, you are already familiar with the instrument, opt to buy a professional euphonium, available for classical music, jazz bands, or brass bands.
  2. Materials used in manufacturing are also essential. Euphoniums are made of metal, but there is a variety in their composition. For example, low-cost euphoniums are usually made of brass compared to those made of gold or silver-plated brass, which have a higher value.
