Buy a Fliscorn

The fliscorn is a brass wind instrument whose design closely resembles that of the trumpet. Its sound, darker, softer, and rounder than that of the trumpet, is primarily used by U.S. military bands. If you want to buy a fliscorn, below are some guidelines that will help you make a proper selection.

The fliscorn is a musical instrument that belongs to the family of bugles or saxhorns, the origin of which is still under discussion. Some attribute it to Michael Saurle (the father), who patented a keyed bugle in Bavaria in 1832. Others indicate that its inventor was the Belgian Adolphe Sax, who patented the saxhorn, a type of bugle with keys, in 1845.

Characteristics of the Fliscorn

The sound of the fliscorn is generated by the oscillations in the column of air contained in a bent tube. These vibrations are induced by the air that the performer blows from their lips, supported on a mouthpiece called a "boquilla."

Although the design of the fliscorn initially appears similar to that of a trumpet, there is a marked difference in how the tube is coiled in each instrument. The fliscorn has a more oval spiral compared to the trumpet.

Generally, the fliscorn uses the same fingering system as other brass instruments. This means certain notes can be played without pressing keys, while the remaining notes are achieved by combining pressure on the keys.

The modern fliscorn is preferably made of brass and is sometimes plated with silver, nickel, gold, or copper. It is tuned to B-flat (B flat), which is two semitones below C.

Types of Fliscorns

There are two types of fliscorns:

Their construction is similar, with the exception of the position of their buttons or paddles. The piston fliscorn has its buttons positioned similarly to those of the trumpet, while the cylinder fliscorn has its paddles on the side. This makes performers prefer to place the latter sideways (compared to how a trumpet is played) to facilitate the fingering of its keys.

What is the Role of the Fliscorn in the Orchestra or Band?

The fliscorn emits a darker, softer, and rounder sound than the trumpet or cornet, so it generally has a smoother and more reflective role, and is much more melodic than those instruments. It is typically used to carry the melody of the processional march or pasodoble.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below we provide answers to a set of questions that visitors to our page often ask.

How difficult is it to play a fliscorn?

Mastering the execution of a piston fliscorn presents a difficulty similar to that required for a trumpet. In fact, the note positions of these two instruments coincide.

In the case of a cylinder fliscorn, its interpretation requires adapting to its playing position, which is different from the one generally used in brass instruments. This can present an additional difficulty, especially for those who already have some practice playing trumpets or cornets.

What is the best fliscorn for learning?

The best instruments for developing this learning are piston fliscorns because they use the natural position of trumpets. For example, the Consolat De Mar FC-1150 Fliscorn is ideal for these purposes, as it is a robust and economical instrument.

What differentiates a trumpet from a fliscorn?

The main difference between a trumpet and a fliscorn is the development of the spiral of their tubes. In the case of the trumpet, the spiral is flatter, while in the case of the fliscorn, it is more oval.

How much does a fliscorn cost?

The price of an affordable fliscorn, ideal for starting to learn its execution, is around €280. On the other hand, a high-end professional fliscorn with silver plating costs around €3,000.
